The hardware supports it. We do the upgrade, your files and settings stay where they are, and for most machines the computer never leaves your desk.

The hardware cannot run Windows 11. That is a specific technical requirement, not an opinion about how old the machine feels.

And occasionally, leave it alone. If a machine runs one piece of equipment, sits off the network, and holds nothing sensitive, replacing it may be a waste of your money. We will tell you when that is the case.

WHY THIS COMES UP

Nothing broke. It just stopped getting fixed.

Three things are worth understanding, and none of them show up on screen.

Support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer issues standard security updates for Windows 10. The computer does not get worse that day and nothing looks different. What stops is the repairs. Microsoft keeps finding security holes in Windows and keeps fixing them for everyone still supported. Those machines are no longer on that list.

Windows 11 needs specific hardware. It requires TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, and a processor on Microsoft's compatible list. That single requirement is the whole reason some of your machines upgrade for free and others have to be replaced. It has nothing to do with how fast the computer feels or how well it has been looked after.

The paid extension doubles every year. Microsoft does sell extended security updates to businesses, for a maximum of three years. The price per device doubles each consecutive year, and then it ends. It is a bridge for a machine you genuinely cannot move yet, not a way to avoid the decision.

The questions people ask

How many of ours are affected?

We know, and your technician will tell you. It is usually fewer than people expect, and most of those are upgrades rather than replacements. You do not need to count anything or check any machines yourself.

They work fine. Why does this matter?

They will keep working fine, which is exactly why it is easy to leave alone. What changed is not the computer, it is the repairs. Microsoft keeps finding security holes in Windows and keeps fixing them for supported versions. Windows 10 machines stopped being on that list in October 2025, so the list of known ways in only grows from here.

Why can some upgrade for free and others need replacing?

Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, and a processor on Microsoft's compatible list. A computer either has those or it does not. It is a hardware requirement rather than a judgement about the machine, which is why a well-kept computer can still fail it and a scruffy one can pass.

Can we just pay Microsoft to keep the updates coming?

For a while, yes. Microsoft sells extended security updates to businesses for a maximum of three years, and the price per device doubles each consecutive year before the programme ends entirely. It is worth doing for a machine you genuinely cannot move yet, such as one tied to a piece of equipment. It is an expensive way to delay a decision you will still have to make.

Does this affect our insurance or our compliance obligations?

It can, and we are not going to pretend we can answer it for you. Some cyber liability policies contain an exclusion for unsupported or end-of-life software, and whether yours does depends on your carrier and your policy. Most of our clients are law firms, dental and medical practices, and accounting and advisory firms, where "were reasonable safeguards in place" is a question that gets asked after an incident rather than before one.

It is worth raising with your broker, and you cannot raise it properly until you know what is actually running in your office. That part we can tell you.

Will we lose our files, or have to set everything up again?

On an upgrade, no. Your files, your settings, and your programs come across and the machine stays on the desk. On a replacement we move everything over and set it up the way you had it before you sit down at it.

How long is someone at my desk?

For most upgrades, not long, and it can be done early, late, or after hours so nobody loses a working morning. Replacements take a little longer because we move your files and set the machine up first.

What is this going to cost?

Upgrades and replacements are very different numbers, and it depends on how many of each you have, so any figure on a web page would be useless to you. Your technician will give you a real one. You see any cost before anything is ordered, and nothing is ordered without your approval.
